The book Modelling and control in oil production - MATLAB applications has a blending rarely found in traditional books about Process Control. It combines the classic control theory with many practical problems in the area of oil and gas production processes. Additionally, this book has the original aspect of presenting and rigorously analysing the real problems that affect oil platform control systems with a focus on deep water production – certainly, one of the most challenging themes that will be faced by control engineers in the following decades.

I understand that this book may be used by three different publics:

• Students from undergraduate engineering courses who have the discipline Process Control in their syllabus. In the Chapters 4 to 11, the reader will find all the control theory generally presented in undergraduate engineering courses, in particular, in the courses of Chemical Engineering.
• Control engineers involved with control system projects of oil and gas production will find in the Chapters 1, 2 and 13 the rigorous modelling of processes and equipment involved in oil and gas production at oil platforms. Moreover, Chapter 12 is especially important for the application engineer, as it presents in details the innovative methodology of band level control.
• Researchers involved in the development of new control algorithms may use this book to know process details, important variables and objectives of control systems of an oil and gas production system.
